The world is already full of photographs. What is becoming harder to find is certainty about what those photographs actually are.
Stock photography has long leaned toward images made to illustrate an idea rather than document something that happened. That isn't necessarily a problem - sometimes you need a beautiful, polished image to communicate a concept. But it does mean that when you need a photograph of the real world, it can be difficult to know whether you are looking at one.
Now there is another layer of uncertainty. AI-generated images are increasingly mixed into the same visual ecosystem as photographs. The distinction between a photograph and an image that was created or substantially altered can be difficult, sometimes impossible, for the person looking at it to determine.
Image Reserve exists to make that distinction simple.
Image Reserve is a stock archive of genuine photographs. The images are minimally processed and remain faithful to what was actually photographed. There are only limited adjustments that don't change the substance of the image, such as cropping, rotation, and slight contrast correction.
The goal isn't to make photographs look less good. It's to make sure they represent undistorted reality.
I believe there is value in having a place where a photograph can be used with confidence: in a historical article, a book, a documentary, an educational project, a publication, or anywhere the difference between an image of something and an image representing something matters.
There are excellent editorial or photojournalistic archives already, particularly within news and editorial agencies. But these collections are often built primarily for the needs of news organizations and are tied to large, ongoing subscriptions. Image Reserve is about making genuine photographs accessible as a stock archive in their own right.
Because a photograph can be more than an illustration. As generated and heavily manipulated imagery becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from photography, I think there should also be a growing place for images that don't ask you to wonder.
